Dear Residency Candidate:
Welcome to the new Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency!
Thank you for your interest in our program. These are exciting times at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, and we are eager about the future of graduate medical education at our institution. As we embark on this journey, we look forward to providing you an outstanding training experience in a setting that is caring and supportive. Our program will begin with the goal of producing excellent physicians who will achieve success in virtually every career path imaginable in medicine; from pursuing training in subspecialty medicine, to providing primary care in our diverse and vibrant community.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital offers residents an ideal environment to foster the growth of well-rounded and confident internists. As the primary provider of healthcare on the south shore of eastern Long Island, our institution attracts patients from every socioeconomic and cultural background conceivable. Residents will gain experience taking care of patients in a state-of -the art community hospital that is a certified area trauma center, a stroke center, and has an active cardiac catheterization program. Our ambulatory resident practice boasts over 11,000 visits per year, and is located in a newly constructed facility directly across from the hospital campus.
Key to our mission is making certain that our program invests in our residents. For that reason, our faculty is comprised of well-respected medical educators whose prime objective is modeling and teaching the kind of evidence-based, patient-centered care that we expect from our graduates. Robust scholarship opportunities will supplement our trainees' educational experience. All residents are encouraged to pursue research activity and are given dedicated time to pursue quality and safety scholarship. In support of our mission, we will provide our residents with individualized mentoring so that they can pursue their career aspirations with confidence.
As a new program, our residency was designed with education as its primary objective from the outset. Presently, our services are fully staffed with attending physicians, hence we created the program with the goal of crafting the optimal educational experience for our residents. This allowed us to build our schedule utilizing a "4+1" format and create time during our ambulatory weeks to train residents in quality improvement and patient safety. It also allowed us to construct a curriculum that includes robust inpatient and ambulatory exposure, while allowing time for electives and an atmosphere conducive to resident wellness.
Once again, we appreciate your interest in our residency program. I look forward to meeting many of you during the interview season and discussing why I believe Brookhaven will be a wonderful place to mature as a physician! I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our program. I am certain that you will be delighted with the superb educational experience we offer and I hope that you will consider us for your residency training.
